Jersey Mike’s partners with Special Olympics Maryland for ‘Day of Giving’

Wednesday is a “Day of Giving” at participating Jersey Mike’s restaurants in Maryland, and every dollar customers spend will go directly to Special Olympics Maryland. Jersey Mike’s “Day of Giving” supports more than 200 charities nationwide, including SOMD. “Anything you buy — cookie, brownies — calories don’t count today. One hundred percent of that goes all to the Special Olympics of Maryland,” Jersey Mike’s owner and operator Paul Weitz said. “One hundred percent of it. We don’t take any food cost out, nothing comes out.”Last year, Weitz said the “Day of Giving” was so successful that he doubled his business at all five of his stores with all of the money going to SOMD to support more than 6,000 athletes who play sports year-round for free.”It really means everything, not just to myself, but to my fellow athletes,” SOMD athlete Annu Singleton said.”We just had a state basketball championship at the University of Maryland. Of course, we’re looking forward to our summer games at Towson University, and in the middle, we have a lot of competitions that we could definitely use these funds toward,” said Kira Northrop, with SOMD.Jersey Mike’s “Day of Giving” is part of their “Month of Giving.” Last year, the chain raised more than $20 million nationwide for charities, and they hope to beat that this year.“You don’t have to jump in the cold water (for the Polar Bear Plunge). You don’t have to do any repelling off of the building. You can just have a great meal at Jersey Mike’s,” Northrop said.
