An Army Air Force veteran who served in World War II celebrated his 99th birthday in Oklahoma.Philip Read has lived in Cole, Oklahoma, his whole life. He said Monday was one of the most special days of his 99 years. “Oh, it’s nice. This is the biggest birthday party I’ve ever had,” Read said.Read’s hometown came together to honor him. “I was born here. I was born in the house I’m living in 99 years ago,” Read said.He said he’s one of few residents left in the small town. “There’s hardly anybody left except the younger ones, all the old ones are gone. I guess they just didn’t live long enough,” Read said.His nurses said he’s a jack of all trades. “He does everything, he mows his lawn. He is so with it and he is just the most gentle, wonderful man,” said Michelle Temple, Read’s nurse and care manager.Read’s nurses said he’s worked for the post office and was the town’s first fire chief.”He’s very kind and gentle and it’s an honor. It’s a true honor to see a World War II veteran thrive so well,” said Moon Khorsandnia, Read’s CNA.Read said he had a few birthday wishes: to eat a grilled cheese, birthday cake and one more wish.”That I have another one,” Read said.He wants another birthday party for his 100th birthday next year.”I think I’ll be here. I may have another party then,” Read said.
