Police, bars stress safety for St. Patrick’s Day weekend; rideshare credit offered

As people ventured out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Fells Point, police were out as well.John Eddy dressed up as St. Patrick, and he was one of many people who celebrated at Cat’s Eye Pub.”It’s unbelievable. I lived in a lot of places, but look at this place. It’s full, we’re singing, we’re dancing we’re hugging, it’s awesome,” Eddy said.”Baltimore is an immigrant town. All the Irish that landed here, and in York, both to find new worlds and find a new way of life, so all that ties into what we’re trying to keep alive,” said Joe Brooks.”It brings culture with fun, and everyone is Irish today,” said Tim Hayden.Jen, a manager at Cat’s Eye Pub, said they want people to have fun, but also to keep everyone safe.”Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate; Uber; safe travels together; and keep your friends close. You guys are out together, so stay together,” she said. “It was about 50 people sitting outside waiting for us when we opened this morning.”Maryland State Police Maj. Daniel Pickett, acting bureau chief of field operations, said the department received a grant that will help fund additional patrols this weekend.”Our (State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort) team, which focuses on impaired driving, will be out targeting those roadways that we know have been a problem in the past with impaired drivers,” Pickett said.Pickett said your luck could run out if you make a bad decision.”Don’t drink and drive. If you’re planning to go out, make a plan, plan ahead, plan to have a designated driver, or use a taxi or Uber. Impaired driving, DUI driving, however you want to call it, it’s not worth the risk to yourself, your family or others,” Pickett said.Rideshare credits of $15 are also available from 4 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday and from 4 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday, while supplies last.
