The Baltimore Orioles announced today that standout pitching prospect Cade Povich will join the team in Toronto. The left hander isn’t formally on the roster just yet, but fans could expect a move to come as soon as tomorrow.
There is a lot of speculation that Povich could be on the roster before Thursday’s series finale against the Blue Jays. Kyle Bradish was scheduled to start, but manager Brandon Hyde said they might give him an extra day of rest. Bradish failed to make it out of the third inning in his last start on June 1st against Tampa Bay. He gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks. The start prior to that was a gem where he threw seven innings of no-hit baseball in a win against the White Sox.
The Minnesota Twins drafted Cade Povich in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He spent his first season in rookie ball and single-A where he had an ERA of 0.90 in 10 innings. Minnesota dealt him to the Orioles in 2022 as a part of the Jorge Lopez deal. Povich pitched in A+ and AA in 2022 and had a combined ERA of 4.50 in 114 innings. He showcased his ability to strike hitters out, striking out 148 batters in those innings.
Povich spent the majority of 2023 with AA Bowie but did make an appearance with AAA Norfolk. His ERA was a little elevated at 5.04, but he did strike out 171 batters in 126.2 innings.
So far in 2024 Povich has a 3.18 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 56.2 innings. Many fans thought Povich would be called up sooner, but it looks like his chance may be on the horizon. Baltimore’s starting rotation has been bruised and battered so far this season.
