Maryland state trooper shot on Lower Eastern Shore

A Maryland State trooper was shot Monday night during a traffic stop in Wicomico County. According to the Maryland State Police, at around 10 p.m., a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a Toyota Prius on eastbound U.S. Route 50 near the Vienna Scale House. The trooper approached the vehicle when the driver shot at and struck the trooper several times. The trooper returned fire, but none of the people in the car were hit.Another trooper arrived at the scene and provided medical treatment to the injured trooper until EMS arrived and then transported him to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury for medical treatment of injuries.According to officials, shortly after the incident, they found the suspect’s vehicle in the area of U.S. Route 54 and Providence Church Road in Delmar. Police followed the vehicle to the 600 block of Elizabeth Street, a dead-end street. Police said the driver attempted to turn the vehicle around and crashed into two vehicles before hitting a tree. Police said they then surrounded the vehicle and saw the suspect slumped over the wheel after apparently shooting himself. No shots were fired at the scene of this crash, according to police. The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Keiford Copper III, of Trappe.Two other suspects from the vehicle were found around 12:30 a.m. after a 911 call reported two unidentified men in a Hebron neighborhood. They were located on Porter Mill Road and were taken into custody without incident.The investigation is ongoing, and there is no threat to the public. This report will be updated.
