Local teacher and barber partner to bring free haircuts to academic scholars for Black History Month

AND RETAINING MORE TEACHERS OF COLOR. AS WE CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY IN OUR COMMUNITY, ONE LOCAL TEACHER IS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO RECOGNIZE BLACK SCHOLARS. ASHLEY: LACEY ROBERTS SHOWS US HOW SHE IS CELEBRATING HER STUDENTS WHILE OBSERVING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MONTH. LACEY: FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF WAYS TO CELEBRATE BLACK EXCELLENCE ALL MONTH LONG BUT TODAY ONE LOCAL TEACHER DECIDED TO CELEBRATE HER SCHOLAR STUDENTS WITH FREE HAIRCUTS. SYLVIA BERNAL IS A THIRD GRADE TEACHER AT HORIZON SCIENCE ACADEMY AND DECIDED TO CELEBRATE HER SCHOLAR STUDENTS WITH AN EVENT. >> THIS IS FOR STUDENTS EXCELLING ABOVE THEIR CLASS IN THEIR SCHOOL WORK AND BEHAVIOR. LIKE THIRD GRADER KENDALL MEANS, WHO SAYS HIS FAVORITE SUBJECTS ARE READING AND SPELLING. BERNAL SAYS CELEBRATING THE KIDS THIS WAY ALSO GIVES THEM A CHANCE TO HAVE SOMEONE TO LOOK UP TO THAT LOOKS LIKE THEM. AND THAT’S WHERE DANNY DA BARBER COMES IN, HE SAYS HE STARTED FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS IN SCHOOLS AND SAYS EVENTS LIKE THIS GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO BE A MENTOR AND FRIEND ALL WHILE HELPING THEM FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES. >> I WAS GOING TO WHOLE SCHOOLS CUTTING CLASSROOMS. YOU KNOW BECAUSE I WAS TAUGHT THAT THE GOOD ENERGY YOU PUT IN THE UNIVERSE COMES BACK TEN TIME — TIMES OVER A. AND I UNDERSTOOD THAT. >> I THINK THAT IT’S GREAT THAT HE WOULD BE A MENTOR AND COME TO OUR SCHOOL AND GIVE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND GIVE THESE STUDENTS SOMETHING THAT THEY ARE LACKING OR SOMETHING THAT THEY CAN LOOK FORWARD TO AND WITH OUR TARGET BEING BLACK HISTORY MONTH I WANT THEM TO SEE BLACK EXCELLENCE IN RARE FORM. Teacher, barber partner giving free haircuts to academic scholars for Black History Month

This month is full of activities and ways to learn about Black History Month. Third-grade school teacher Sylvia Bernal has come up with her own event to give back to her scholar students at Horizon Science Academy. Scholar students are students that have excelled beyond their classmates in academics and behavior. “We want them to know that their hard work does not go unnoticed,” Bernal said. She collaborated with a local barber, Danny Da Barber, who says giving back is a part of who he is. He says he started from humble beginnings cutting in schools, so what better way to show young men appreciation than with a fresh haircut?”I was going to whole schools cutting classrooms, you know, because I was taught that the good energy you put in the universe comes back 10 times over, and I understood that. At the same time, I was promoting my brand, I was making a child smile, a mom smile, you know. I knew some of those kids’ moms probably couldn’t afford a haircut,” he said. Danny says the time he takes with each haircut allows him to spend time with the kids and talk about life, making him a mentor and role model. Something Bernal says these kids need to see for themselves. “I think that it’s great that he would be a mentor and come to our school and give those opportunities and give these students something that they are lacking or something that they can look forward to. And with our target being Black History Month, I want them to see Black excellence in rare form,” she said.
