BOWIE, Md. — In a move aimed at enhancing road safety, the Bowie Police Department has initiated a one-month demonstration program featuring artificial intelligence-powered stop sign cameras at key intersections throughout the city.
The program, which began on August 26, 2024, coincides with the start of the Prince George’s County school year. High-resolution cameras with real-time monitoring capabilities will be operational at two or more intersections from a list of six potential locations:
- Kenhill Drive at Belair Drive
- Belair Drive at Stonybrook Drive
- Mt Oak Road at Ann Arbor Lane
- Fred Robinson Way and Evergreen Parkway
- Pointer Ridge Drive and Parkington Lane
- Pin Oak Parkway and Peachtree Lane
Chief Dwayne Preston of the Bowie Police Department emphasized the department’s commitment to road safety, stating, “Exploring innovative solutions such as the Obvio Inc. Stop Sign Camera System provides another tool we may use to ensure that our intersections are safer for all motorists and pedestrians.”
The demonstration aims to test the effectiveness of the technology in reducing stop sign violations and related accidents. While the cameras will capture and record violations, officials stress that no personal information will be collected, and no tickets will be issued during this trial period.
Community engagement is a key component of the program, with the police department actively seeking public feedback. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and opinions, which will play a crucial role in evaluating the initiative’s success and considering its future implementation.
As the program unfolds, local residents can expect to see the cameras at various intersections throughout Bowie. The police department has assured that all installations comply with state and local regulations.
