Chewy Stock Roars On Big Bite By Meme Trader, GameStop Retreats


Meme trader Keith Gill, known online as Roaring Kitty, has a new major holding – Chewy stock. Shares of the pet products delivery company rallied early Monday after a Securities and Exchange Commission filing revealed Gill’s stake. Other meme stocks fell early Monday.

An SEC filing dated June 24 shows that Gill owns 9,001,000 shares of Chewy (CHWY) stock, representing a 6.6% stake in the company. The holdings are worth $245.18 million based on Friday’s closing price of 27.24.

The holding makes Gill Chewy’s third-largest shareholder, trailing only investment firms Baillie Gifford and Vanguard, according to FactSet data.

Gill provided a hint into his latest holding on June 27, when he posted a photo on X of a cartoon dog. Chewy stock soared as much as 34% last Thursday on the post before closing down a fraction. CHWY stock retreated 6.2% on Friday.

Meanwhile, Petco (WOOF) stock leapt 13.2% Friday in strong volume, as some Roaring Kitty followers may have misinterpreted the post.

Chewy stock jumped 5.7% early Monday after soaring more than 20% premarket on Gill’s SEC filing. CHWY stock rallied 15.3% this year through Friday’s close.

Shares, near lows in a three and a half year decline, are not on the radar for growth stock investors.

Other meme stocks, however, generally retreated Monday.

GameStop (GME), Gill’s favorite meme stock, carved more than 7% lower Monday. AMC Entertainment (AMC) slid 2% after the opening bell.

BlackBerry (BB) dipped a fraction.
