Baltimore Center Stage gave 11 News a preview of their 2023-24 season. In addition to all main-stage programming, it will also produce a wide range of artistic programs. Events will include concert series, film screenings and talks with members of Baltimore and artistic communities.The season opens with “Lady Day” at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a show about the life of Billie Holiday.Sarah Cain said Center Stage wanted to start the season with a feeling of home.”Billie Holiday has a big tie to the city, and we wanted to start off the season celebrating her and her life,” Cain said. “It’s going to be the directorial debut of Nicole Salter who is an amazing award-winning playwright and artist with connections to Baltimore as well.”That show will feature Holiday’s music with a live band. The schedule also includes “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde.”We’re excited to give the classic a little bit of a modern twist. We’re referring to it as the “Bridgerton” version,” Cain said.Other shows include the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “The Hot Wing King.” Plus, a new musical called “Mexodus.””It is about the underground railroad that led south, the story people don’t know as well about the ways enslaved people went to Mexico to escape slavery,” said Cain.Annalisa Dias said you can also expect continuing artistic, civic, and learning initiatives, like the Baltimore butterfly sessions.”It’s an art and civic dialogue series where we use art as a catalyst for civic conversations, so each one is themed around a particular topic. We program music and poetry and a keynote speaker,” Dias said.There will also be a young playwright’s festival.”There will be new work, puppetry dance music and all kinds of Baltimore makers at this festival,” Dias said.The season kicks off Sept. 14.
