YouTube Shorts are getting longer. Starting on October 15, you can create Shorts that are up to 3 minutes long. This was apparently a top requested feature, and now it’s almost here.
The change obviously won’t affect any videos uploaded before October 15, and applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio. YouTube says it will also work hard to improve recommendations for longer Shorts “in the coming months”.
Shorts are also getting templates, which you can try by tapping Remix on a Short and then selecting Use this template. And, “in the coming months”, you’ll be able to remix clips from your favorite YouTube videos – even pulling from multiple clips across YouTube.
There’s a new Shorts Trends page on mobile, and you’ll soon get a preview of what people are saying in comments right in the Shorts feed.
If you hate Shorts, then you’ll be happy to know that YouTube will introduce an option to show fewer of them. You can choose this by tapping on the three dots in the upper right of any Shorts grid on your Home feed. Unfortunately, this will only temporarily show you fewer Shorts, but it’s better than nothing, we guess.
