Which Abbott Elementary Teachers Do You Work With?

When the hit ABC TV show Abbott Elementary first premiered in 2021, I was instantly hooked. I could easily relate to many of the situations portrayed in the mockumentary-style sitcom. The show is usually on point, in both lighthearted and serious situations. The dynamics between the characters are equally amusing, often reminding me of different educators I work with. How about you? As Abbott Elementary enters its fourth season this month, let’s see which characters from the show are just like educators you work with.

Janine Teagues: The Overachiever

Ms. Teagues is the definition of Super Teacher. She goes above and beyond when it comes to everything: activities with her students, volunteering on every school committee, crafting classroom decor and student gifts late into the night, and pleasing her colleagues. She is passionate and idealistic, with high hopes for the future of education. Sometimes her enthusiasm is too much for her colleagues to handle, but she receives their help (and advice) whenever she needs it. She lives and breathes teaching!

Gregory Eddie: The Quiet Observer

Portrayed by: Tyler James Williams

Mr. Eddie starts out at Abbott as a substitute teacher, hesitant to commit to the profession full-time. As he struggles with self-doubt and what he really wants to do with his life, he eventually takes on a permanent teaching position. He is quiet and calm, often overthinking his next move. His hidden talents lead him to start an urban school garden, which helps him further connect to his students. It’s also worth noting the growing attraction between him and Ms. Teagues as the show progresses, although there always seem to be obstacles in the way!

Barbara Howard: The Old-School Veteran

Portrayed by: Sheryl Lee Ralph

Mrs. Howard is a veteran teacher with more experience than any other staff member at Abbott. She is set in her ways, has strong morals, is deeply religious, and greatly resists change. She puts up a fight when it comes to new methods and procedures, doing what she feels is best for her students. Younger teachers seek her advice often on everything from teaching to the game of life. She is a role model to her students and colleagues.

Melissa Schemmenti: The Snarky Tough Lady

Ms. Schemmenti is a no-nonsense, sarcastic woman who rebels against authority. You do not want to get on her bad side! She may come across as scary (to students and staff members alike), but she has a big heart and loves her students. Like Mrs. Howard, she is a dedicated veteran teacher who likes to do things her way. She has connections all over town when something needs to get done, even if they may be super shady!

Jacob Hill: The Quirky Progressive

Chris Pefetti from the television show Abbott Elementary
Disney/Pamela Littky

Portrayed by: Chris Perfetti

Mr. Hill is a passionate, socially awkward, lovable guy who can be overanxious at times. Even when his colleagues aren’t on board, he eagerly takes on new teaching methods. He is socially conscious and strives to make his classroom inclusive. He is a people-pleaser who avoids conflict.

Ava Coleman: The Self-Absorbed Diva

Janelle James from the television show Abbott Elementary

Portrayed by: Janelle James

Ms. Coleman is the principal of Abbott Elementary. She is charming and irresponsible, always putting herself before the staff and students. Her terrible choices lead to ridiculous and often far-fetched situations. While her actions are often exaggerated, her character represents the disconnect between administrators and their staffs. Her strong personality helps her get her way whenever possible.

Mr. Johnson: The Jack-of-All-Trades

William Stanford Davis from the television show Abbott Elementary
Disney/Pamela Littky

Portrayed by: William Stanford Davis

Mr. Johnson has been the head custodian at Abbott for decades. He somehow knows everything that’s going on at all times. You can’t hide anything from him! He has many hidden talents and interests, which come to light each season. Everyone knows the school cannot run without him. He has plenty of wisdom to share with his colleagues on a variety of topics and is highly respected.

Season 4 of Abbott Elementary premieres on Wednesday, October 9, at 9:30 p.m. ET/ PT. You can also stream it on Hulu.
