What’s new with Teaching American History Multi-Day Seminars?

An interview with Morgan Lane, Teacher Programs Administrator

We have some exciting updates to our multi-day seminars involving the application periods, hotel room accommodations, and travel stipends.

Can you give a brief description of what a TAH multi-day seminar entails for those who have never attended?

Each multi-day seminar runs for three days, often from Friday evening to Sunday midday. During those three days, a small group of teachers immerse themselves in discussion sessions, shared meals, and a visit to a local historical site. Each seminar focuses on a specific topic of American history. Depending on the topic, teachers will prepare in advance by reading selected documents provided in the course packet. Once the seminar begins, the discussion leader guides a peer-to-peer, text-based conversation among all participants. Teaching American History can offer meals, materials, hotel rooms, and historical site visits at no cost to teachers through grants and generous donations. At the end of each course, every teacher receives a letter of participation for 15 contact hours and a $600 stipend to cover travel costs. How will the multi-day application period be changing?

We will now offer applications quarterly instead of biannually! That means double the opportunities to apply! While there are now more chances to submit an application, please keep in mind that TAH multi-day seminars continue to grow in popularity. We had over 1,700 applicants last semester, so getting selected is quite a privilege!

TAH normally reserves double-occupancy hotel rooms. Is that still the case?

We are all about building camaraderie amongst our teachers attending the multi-day seminars; however, sometimes you need a little privacy. Starting Fall 2025, all multi-day seminars will be reserved in single occupancy rooms so each participant will have their own private space at no additional cost! Each participant will be responsible for their room incidentals. If you get accepted and would like to room with a fellow attendee, just let us know, and we can still room you together.

How are travel stipends given to participants?

Everyone attending a multi-day seminar will receive a $600 travel stipend to help offset travel costs. These stipends are given via direct deposit on the Friday after the seminar.

Our Winter 2026 multi-day applications will open in August and be available for two weeks. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss the application window!
