ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Founded in 1954, The Anne Arundel Bird Club (AABC) is dedicated to the conservation of birdlife in Maryland. Most of its members consist of Anne Arundel County residents. However, Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s County residents are also welcome in the organization.
The AABC organizes many events for bird enthusiasts, including trips and meetings. Occasionally, they even meet to listen to a lecture. Some of the AABC’s events, such as their meetings, can also be joined remotely.
Their next event, the Quiet Waters Walk is being held on September 15th from 8:00 am to 10:30 am. The AABC holds these walks monthly at parks and other locations in Southern Maryland. The upcoming walk is located at 600 Quiet Waters Park Road, Annapolis, MD 21403.
These walks help bring the Anne Arundel Bird Club together and offer the opportunity to explore new trails. Events like this are the heart of the Anne Arundel Bird Club, and it’s a charitable organization to get involved with if you’re dedicated to protecting the conservation of birds in Maryland. “We reached out to the Anne Arundel Bird Club for comment about what makes their club important. Their response was, “The Anne Arundel Bird Club is a place where people interested in birds come together to learn about and share information about birds. Everyone is welcome, whether they are just starting out or an expert in the field. Since I joined the Club as a novice bird watcher with a backyard bird feeder, I have learned a lot and am still learning from the knowledgeable and experienced Club members that are more than willing to share their knowledge. Bird watching is a great way to connect with nature and most likely reduce your stress levels.”
They continued, “The speakers at our monthly meetings and our field trip leaders not only strive to help us be better at identifying birds but also to give us an appreciation of how dependent the birds we love watching are on the environment. Slowing the decline of bird populations starts with appreciating birds, but the more we learn about their behavior and habitat, the more we realize that their future is in our hands. Our goal is to promote through birding, the knowledge and conservation of wildlife, natural habitats, and natural resources, and to foster an appreciation of our natural environment.”
If you’re a bird-watcher, environmental activist, or simply enjoy nature, then you can join the AABC too. Basic membership fees are $6.00 for those under 18, $35.00 for adults, and $45.00 for a household membership.
You can also go to the AABC’s Facebook page to find pictures like the ones posted above. They regularly post aviary photography on their page, so it’s worth following if you’re a Maryland bird watcher or hobbyist.
If you’re interested in getting involved with one of Southern Maryland’s biggest bird communities, then you can visit their website to donate and purchase memberships. You can send questions about the AABC and their events to annearundel@mdbirds.org.
