BENEDICT, Md.Shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Prince Frederick Barrack responded to Maryland Route 231, in the area of the Benedict Bridge, for a report of a multi-vehicle crash

The driver of a Kia, a 79-year-old female, and the driver of a Ford, a 69-year-old female, were flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

According to a preliminary investigation, the Kia was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Route 231 onto Hallowing Lane, when for unknown reasons, struck the Ford, which was traveling eastbound on Route 231. The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to be redirected into a business parking lot, where they struck three unoccupied U-Haul trucks. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in this crash.

Assistance was provided by officers from the Maryland Natural Resources Police and personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.

Maryland Route 231 was closed for approximately an hour for the investigation. The crash investigation remains active and ongoing.
