Under The Shell: Olympian and Maryland track and field assistant Rudy Winkler

On this week’s episode of the Under the Shell Podcast, hosts Brendan Weissel, Sam Jane and Michael Howes are joined by Olympian and Maryland track and field assistant Rudy Winkler.

Winkler has qualified for three Olympic Games for hammer and weight throwing, including the past summer’s Olympic Games in Paris. He is the American record-holder in the event with a throw of 82.71m for the hammer.

“I didn’t just train this past year just for this Olympics. I train all the time, year-round in all the years that there isn’t an Olympics,” Winkler said. “When you watch the Olympics … I think there’s a loss of the steps that it took to get there.”

The hosts discussed men’s soccer’s surge into the top 10, field hockey’s strong win at Iowa and previewed Maryland football’s Friday night game against Northwestern. Doyle Preston Royal was this week’s Terrific Terp.
