LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary’s County Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the Board of Education’s 2025 fiscal year budget of $134.3 million to be distributed in four equal installments throughout the fiscal year during their June 11, 2024, meeting.

This budget includes food service funding and capital budgets for the fiscal year including full-time teacher positions.

The budget increased compared to 2024 by $6.3 million, according to the Deputy Director of Finance, Joyce Sapp.

The Superintendent of St. Mary County’s Public Schools, Dr. J. Scott Smith expressed appreciation for their collaboration with the Commissioners over the years.

“I cannot thank the Commissioners enough for the way which we have gone about our business over these past several years, and this past year particularly,” Smith said.

Very challenging decisions with a lot of understanding needed to be made, according to Smith. Despite this, he is content with the final fiscal year budget.

“I’m very proud to be in St. Mary’s County, and I’m very proud to be working with all of you and that we find ourselves here with a completely balanced budget,” Smith said.

Smith believes going forward, the challenge of teacher retention in public education will be put at the forefront.
