St. Mary’s – 3 Neumann – 2
How it Happened
- Neumann struck first in the first set, winning 25-16. The Seahawks were able to keep in close for the majority of the set, but the Knights rode a seven point run to capture an 11 point lead and seize all momentum.
- The second set was a different story, with St. Mary’s scoring the first four points. The Seahawks never trailed in the set and were able to maintain a comfortable lead throughout. Grace Gilmore and Julia Bobowski helped propel the Seahawks to a set victory.
- The Knights jumped out to a 7-0 lead to begin the third set. St. Mary’s would go on to find a spark, but could never quite get close enough to level the score. Faith Shockley began to get into the mix with a couple of big kills and Grace Gilmore recorded back to back kills at the end of the set for the Seahawks, but the Knights still went on to take the set, 25-18.
- Things did not look good for the Seahawks as they trailed Neumann 15-10 in the fourth set. With their backs against the wall, St. Mary’s began to rally. Elizabeth Childs went on a four point service run to help even the score at 15. The Knights and Seahawks would trade runs for the remainder of the set, leading to a 24-24 tie game. St. Mary’s got the points when it mattered most. Faith Shockley and Maya Mauro recorded back-to-back kills to help seal the fourth set in the Seahawks favor, 26-24 to force a fifth and final set.
- St. Mary’s once again found themselves facing adversity, trailing 13-8 and two points away from dropping the match. Just when it felt like the Knights were going to close out the game, the Seahawks dug in and went on a six point service run with Julia Bobrowski to take their first lead of the set. Bobrowksi recorded two service aces over that stretch and forced the Knights into an attacking error as well. The dramatics wouldn’t end there. Neumann scored two unanswered points of their own to retake the lead and earn match point. Just as the Seahawks had done all night, they rallied with the game on the line, this time, it was to the tune of three straight points. St. Mary’s slammed the door shut on the knights with a Maya Mauro kill and an Elizabeth Childs service ace to take the fifth set, 17-15 and more importantly, the match.
