St. Mary’s College Announces Athletics Hall of Fame Legends Class of 2024

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – St. Mary’s College of Maryland Director of Athletics and Recreation Crystal Gibson is excited to present the Athletics Hall of Fame Legends Class of 2024 Thursday morning (Sept. 5). This marks the 22nd induction class in the 34-year history of the Hall of Fame.

This year’s two Legends are Dr. Jeffrey Byrd and Scott Devine. Additionally, there will be a special recognition for President Tuajuanda C. Jordan for her numerous contributions to SMCM athletics during her 10-year tenure.

“We are extremely excited to announce the newest Seahawks for the 2024 St. Mary’s College of Maryland Hall of Fame induction. This class is composed of individuals who passionately worked to elevate the Seahawk athletic programs to a place of visibility we are still benefiting from to this day,” Gibson stated.

The Hall of Fame Legends Class of 2024 induction ceremony will be Friday, October 18, as part of the 2024 Hawktoberfest festivities — the College’s version of homecoming. This year’s class will be recognized as well at intermission between the second and third set of the Seahawks volleyball match in the Michael P. O’Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.

Gibson also announced that the Hall of Fame ceremony will return to an annual celebration following a 23-year span of the ceremony happening every two years between 2000 and 2023. Originally, the Hall of Fame ceremony occurred every year starting with the inaugural class in 1990 but following the Class of 2000 induction, the Hall of Fame took place every two years.

A brief description of this year’s inductees follows. For more detailed information, please contact Nairem Moran, director of athletic communications, at 240-895-4482 or nmoran@smcm.edu.

Jordan aided in the addition of full-time staff positions and the growth of varsity sport offerings to 23 while providing the resources for various facilities upgrades and navigating the College’s transition from the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference to the United East Conference.

Devine served as the Seahawks’ Director of Athletics & Recreation from 2000 to 2020. The Department of Athletics & Recreation experienced tremendous growth and expansion under his leadership. He helped to develop the Seahawk logo and wordmark plus oversaw the addition of four varsity sports – men’s & women’s cross country (2009) and men’s & women’s rowing (2016-17).

Byrd was not only the department’s Faculty Athletics Representative for 17 years (2003-2020) and an assistant women’s basketball coach for four seasons, but he is also an avid supporter of all the Seahawk athletic programs.

Gibson added, “We can’t wait to welcome these Seahawks as well as their families and friends back to the College in October to celebrate all their tremendous contributions.”
