Southern Maryland Unites To Bag Hunger: Over 500 Volunteers Package 124,000+ Meals

CALVERT COUNTY, Md. – The sun was smiling, as were all participants, at the third annual Bag Hunger event that took place on Saturday, September 28. Bag Hunger is a community and interfaith initiative focused on combating food insecurity by packaging meals and collecting donations for distribution to local food pantries and shelters, This year’s event drew over 500 volunteers to locations across Southern Maryland.

Four community partners teamed up to host packaging sites: All Saints Episcopal Church, Operation Earnie’s Plate, Solomons Mission Center, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Participants of all ages worked side-by-side in assembly lines to package fortified ready-to-eat meals.

The effort was commendable and the result was remarkable, as 124,128 meals were packaged in a four hour time span.

Organizers praised the service of participants, and the show of commitment to their neighbors who struggle with food insecurity.
