CALIFORNIA, Md. – Southern Maryland and surrounding areas are bracing for another hot and humid day with temperatures expected to reach the mid to upper 90s. Some locations may experience temperatures pushing 100 degrees, prompting a heat advisory that will remain in effect until 8:00 p.m.
Heat index values are projected to range between 102-107 degrees. A cold front is expected to bring strong thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening, between 2-8 p.m. The remainder of the week will see temperatures drop to the mid-80s.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid direct sunlight, and check on relatives and neighbors. It is crucial to never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
For those who work or spend time outdoors, extra precautions should be taken. If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing can also help mitigate the risk.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 immediately.
