SK hynix unveils GDDR7 memory that’s faster and more energy efficient than its predecessor

SK hynix has announced that it will begin mass production of GDDR7 modules in the third quarter of this year (July-September). The new modules offer faster bandwidth and improved power efficiency.

GDDR7 can deliver 32Gbps per pin and SK hynix says that this can reach 40Gbps “depending on the circumstances”. When used on high-end GPUs with 384-bit memory buses, the new memory modules will be able to transfer 1.5TB per second (compared to 1.1TB per second for the previous generation).

Additionally, SK hynix managed to improve the power efficiency by “more than 50%” compared to the previous generation, thanks to improved packaging technology. It increased the number of heat-dissipating layers from four to six, which led to 74% lower thermal resistance (all while maintaining the same physical dimensions).

The “G” in “GDDR” stands for “Graphics”, but the company expects that its modules will see use in other fields too. Sangkwon Lee, Head of DRAM Product Planning & Enablement at SK hynix, said that “GDDR7 is expected to be adopted by a wider range of applications such as high-specification 3D graphics, AI, high-performance computing and autonomous driving.”
