Selena Gomez is once again shutting down speculation that she has gone under the knife for cosmetic reasons.
The 32-year-old singer — who has repeatedly denied plastic surgery rumors over the years — was active on TikTok over the weekend and interacted with one video in which content creator Marissa Barrionuevo was asked to share what work Gomez has gotten done. Barrionuevo is a physician assistant in a plastic surgery office and has a series where she shares side-by-side photos of celebrities before and after receiving cosmetic treatment.
In her original video from 2023, the social media creator shared photos of Gomez but declined to comment on if she has gone under the knife for work, citing Gomez’s health struggles with lupus as one reason that can cause major changes in a person’s appearance. On Saturday, Gomez took to the comments to still express her frustration.
“Honestly I hate this,” the Only Murders in the Building star wrote. “I was on stripes because of flare up. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.”
In response, Barrionuevo used Gomez’s comment to create a new video and apologize for any ill feelings her original post may have caused. “I adore you,” Barrionuevo said, “I really do mean the best, so I apologize if this rubbed you the wrong way in any way whatsoever.”
She also captioned the video, “Although I always try to lead with grace and mindfulness, I am sorry this upset you (and I understand why it did). I decided to stop making videos like this last year because of the negative impact it can cause. It was never my intention.”
Luckily for the PA, Gomez — who was diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and revived a kidney transplant in 2017 as a result of the diagnosis — responded in the comments and assured her that they are all good.
“I love you,” Gomez commented. “Not about you. I just get sad sometimes.”
Back in 2019, Gomez opened up about the struggles she has faced internally and externally after gaining weight as a side effect of her diagnosis and the medications she was prescribed. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue and organs.
“I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time,” Gomez said during a previous podcast appearance. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”
More recently, she took to social media in 2023 to respond to internet bullies who mocked her appearance at the Golden Globes.
“I tend to hold a lot of water weight and that happens very normally, and then, when I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight,” Gomez said of the ups and downs she experiences while on her medication.
“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful,” she continued. “And yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s**t, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself and my medications are important, and I believe they are what helps me.”
