It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert William Poland, age 74, on June 17, 2024. Robert, a resident of Joppa, MD, passed away peacefully at The University of Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD, due to natural causes, including chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus.
Robert was born on June 8, 1950, at Warrington Maternity Home in Warrington, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom, to Mrs. Edith Poland and Mr. Chadwell Poland. As part of a military family, Robert grew up in various places, including England, France, Kansas, and Massachusetts. He graduated from Hanover High School in Massachusetts in 1969 and furthered his education at Massasoit Community College in Abington, MA, ultimately earning a bachelor’s degree from Westfield State College.
On December 20, 1975, Robert married the love of his life, Linda Jean Cunningham, in Greenfield, MA. The couple shared a loving and devoted partnership until Linda’s passing. Robert dedicated 40 years of his life to teaching high school Mathematics and Computer Science with the St. Mary’s County Public School System. He was well-loved by his students and colleagues alike.
Robert had a passion for watching NASCAR and was a devoted husband and supportive father. He was known for his willingness to help others, always ready to lend a hand and offer guidance.
Robert is survived by his daughters, Catherine Williams and Marion Cook, as well as his grandchildren, Kayla Keller, Giani Keller, Alyssa Williams, and Jamal Keller. He is also survived by his siblings, Marion Bauer, James Poland, and Susan Conn, his beloved mother-in-law, Catherine Cunningham, his sister-in-law, Ellen Hardy, and his companion, Charlotte Fiandaca.
He was predeceased by his wife, Linda Poland, and his son, Chad Poland.
Robert’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
