Pitty Pair Barricaded In Scorching Shed: Lexington Park Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges

ANIMAL Cruelty

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – Luis Saul Hernandez-Samayoa of Lexington Park, Maryland, is now facing serious animal cruelty charges after a distressing discovery on June 14, 2024, at his property. According to official court documents, two pit bulls, called “Jay” and “Coco,” were found locked in a shed where temperatures persisted well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The dogs were reportedly in a state of severe distress when authorities arrived.

The situation came to light when Animal Control Officer Lawrence responded to a call from a home inspector on the property. Upon arrival, ACO Lawrence noted the shed’s high security, which was enforced by zip ties and logs, preventing any form of ventilation or escape for the animals. Inside, the temperature difference was palpable, with conditions inside the shed significantly hotter and more oppressive.

The dogs were tethered to the walls of the shed, one so tightly, an officer had to free him from a metal chain with a blade. Officers noted the smell of urine permeated the environment, while ACO Lawrence observed the wood flooring to be soaked through with sweat, as a result of the dogs’ attempts to cool down. Though one of the dogs wagged its tail in relief after the shed was opened, it was clear both animals had suffered greatly due to the lack of adequate care.

Adding to the severity of the situation, Hernandez-Samayoa admitted that he had left the dogs in the shed as he was unable to bring them to his new residence, leaving them in the shed while the property was listed for sale. Witnesses from the neighborhood confirmed that the dogs had been kept outside frequently, exposing them to harsh conditions.

Inside the shed, a water bowl was found half-filled. Hernandez-Samayoa is charged with two counts of animal cruelty for failing to provide proper care and air to the animals. His court date is set for September 20, 2024.

As the region now experiences milder weather, next week’s forecast for Southern Maryland anticipates rising temperatures, peaking mid-week with highs reaching 92°F on Wednesday, August 28th. Residents are advised to make appropriate arrangements for their pets.
