A grand jury has voted to indict former President Donald Trump related to hush money payments during his 2016 campaign for president, according to several news outlets who are citing sources with knowledge of the matter.The New York Times was first to report on the grand jury vote, citing four people with knowledge of the matter.CNN also reported the vote for indictment, citing three sources familiar with the matter.Trump previously took to social media to predict the arrest and call for his supporters to protest the decision. Robert Costello, a lawyer who had a falling out with the star government witness in the Trump investigation, briefly acted as a legal adviser to Cohen after the FBI raided Cohen’s home and apartment in 2018. Cohen, at the time, was being investigated for tax evasion and payments he helped orchestrate in 2016 to buy the silence of two women who claimed to have had sexual encounters with Trump. Cohen, a longtime lawyer for the Trump Organization, ultimately decided to plead guilty in connection with the payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal, which he said were directed by Trump. Trump has denied having sex with either woman. Law enforcement in New York have been making physical preparations for any unrest surrounding a possible indictment, including scaffolding around the building where the grand jury is meeting and the building across the street that houses the district attorney’s office. Trump also faces criminal probes in Atlanta and Washington that could pose a threat to his 2024 presidential race.
