MM 9.27: Maryland women’s basketball predicted to finish fourth in Big Ten

By Christian Andriolas

Maryland women’s basketball was predicted to finish fourth in the new 18-team Big Ten conference by the league’s coaches and media panel Thursday.

The Terps are looking to build on last season, when they fought their way into the NCAA tournament. However, this was as far as they would get, as the Terps suffered a devastating loss to Iowa State in the first round after leading by as many as 20 points.

Maryland has some key returning players. Senior guard Shyanne Sellers is returning after being one of four players in the country to average at least 15 points, five rebounds and five assists per game last year. Other key returners include Bri McDaniel, Emily Fisher, Emma Chardon and Allie Kubek.

Head coaches and the media panel picked USC to finish first, UCLA second and Ohio State third.

These new conference foes will challenge the Terps, who will play 12 games against opponents who made the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Terps open up the season against UMBC on Nov. 4.
