With four Maryland players on the squad, the U.S. field hockey team fell to Argentina, 4-1, in its opening contest of the 2024 Olympic Games.
Former Terp star and midfield/forward hybrid Leah Crouse started the game, while Brooke and Emma DeBerdine and Kelee Lepage came off the bench. Despite their efforts, none of the Maryland players recorded a point.
Argentina led 2-0 at halftime and finished with four goals on 14 shots. The U.S. showed determination in the second half, though, as Ashley Sessa cut the lead to 2-1. However, despite holding 45% of the game’s possession, the U.S. couldn’t match the performance of No. 2-ranked Argentina.
The U.S. faces Spain next on Monday at 7:15 a.m. EST.
