LA PLATA, Md. – On August 19th, 2024, The Baynet shared the story of Katelyn Hawkins, who was demoted because she asked to pump breast milk twice a day at her place of employment. Milky Moms read the story and were allegedly appalled.
Milky Moms want breastfeeding moms to know they are available to help! Doctors Laura Behm and Lea Lacefield created Milky Moms in 2020, when they were struggling with lactation and returning to work. Born and raised in Charles County, they quickly realized it was a service desperately needed.
The doctors began providing lactation consultation virtually since the country was in the middle of a pandemic lockdown. However, in 2021 they opened their first office in La Plata, MD. Milky Moms has quickly grown to eight offices in Maryland (California, Prince Frederick, Leonardtown, Waldorf, Largo, Arnold, Easton) and offices as far as Northern Virginia and Massachusetts.
Savanna Bullard, MS, BSN, RN, IBCLC, PMH-C stated they provide help to nursing moms who are going back to work. They help moms transitioning back to work and educating them of their rights in the workplace. In addition, they provide medical services in the event moms develop thrush, mastitis, or other conditions which develop from nursing. Mental health services are also available as well as newborn care and CPR classes. Most health insurance are accepted, and they provide an income based scale.
Bullard stated she is the mother of four children. Her experience nursing her first child was a disaster and because of lack of available help, she quit. However, she received help from a lactation nurse once her second child was born and it resulted in an amazing experience.
Milky Moms is staffed with 2 doctors, 7 RN IBCLC and one MPH, IBCLC who offer home visits in MD, VA and MD.
