On October 7, 2024, Mary Ann Scaggs passed away surrounded by her family. Mary Ann was born August 17, 1939, in Sharon, PA to Jacob and Mary Flack.
Mary Ann graduated from Farrel High School in Pennsylvania in 1957. After graduating she moved to Washington DC where she worked for the Treasury Department. She met and married Donald Scaggs, eventually buying a home in Clinton MD. Mary Ann was blessed with four children, Stephen (Linda) Scaggs of Hollywood, MD, Sharon (Bob) Wilson of Camp Springs, MD, Susan (Bill) Litzinger of Mechanicsville, MD and Stephanie (Chris) Mosely of Owings, MD.
In 1979 she returned to work for the Federal Government, this time as a statistician and later as an IT Specialist for the United States Census Bureau. She went on to receive her associate’s degree in Computer Science and continued taking classes at the University of Maryland. In 2006, Mary Ann was able to retire after more than 27 years working for the Federal Government.
She was an active member of the Our Lady of Mercy Sodality and choir at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Clinton, MD. She later became a member of the Charitable Society at St John Francis Regis in Hollywood, MD. She loved going to the Northern Senior Center several days a week to play cards, Mahjong, and BINGO on Friday’s. She also volunteered in the Center’s library cataloging and organizing books.
Mary Ann enjoyed reading, painting, drawing, crocheting, and building puzzles. Each hobby offered her a unique way to express herself and unwind from the daily hustle. She loved taking art classes and traveling with her friends from the senior center.
Mary Ann was predeceased by her parents and her siblings: Michael Flack, Richard Flack, Jacob Flack, Anna Ross, Theresa Chavka, and Eleanor Cashier. She is survived by her children, and grandchildren: Amanda, Michael, Dalton, Emily, Shelby, Rachel, Ryan, Nathan, Katie, Sydney, Lauren, and Elizabeth, as well as six great-grandchildren.
On Monday, October 14, 2024, the family will receive friends at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church, 43927 St. John’s Road, Hollywood, MD 20636 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm followed by a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 12:00 pm. A celebration of life gathering will be held after mass at Mechanicsville Moose Lodge #495, 27636 Mechanicsville Rd, Mechanicsville, MD 20659.
Interment will be private.
