LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The local youth football scene reached an exhilarating peak this past weekend as the Lusby and Leonardtown leagues clashed in the inaugural “Battle of the Bridge” championship event.
On a hot and sunny weekend, the young athletes gave their all, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship. The championship event kicked off on Friday night with the seventh and eighth graders battling it out at Appeal Elementary in Lusby. The excitement continued on Saturday, with younger age groups competing fiercely, culminating in a final showdown at 3 PM to determine the ultimate champion.
In the end, it was the Lusby League that emerged victorious, claiming the coveted championship belt.
“It was a hot day and the kids did amazing,” said league organizer Jimmy Eaches. “The belt will now reside at Patuxent High School until next spring.”
Looking ahead, the Lusby-Leonardtown Youth Football League aims to build on this year’s success.
“Our growth has been strategic and measured,” Eaches explained. “We plan to continue partnering with local high school coaches to ensure our athletes receive the best training and support. This collaboration has been a game-changer, and we look forward to expanding our programs even further.”
The league’s structure is supported by Nick Allen, the offensive coordinator at Patuxent High School, and Justin Cunningham, the head football coach at Leonardtown High School. Their involvement has brought invaluable expertise and a vision of creating a pipeline of talent for high school football programs.
The league’s commitment to the community extends beyond the field. At the end of each season, funds are donated to local high schools, supporting the further development of youth sports programs. This initiative ensures that the benefits of the league are felt throughout the community.
Let’s come together to cheer on our future stars and celebrate the spirit of youth football. For more information and updates, including photos and videos from the games, stay tuned to our social media channels and website.
