Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes is a national nonprofit with 121 chapters and “seedlings” across 34 states. Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay, founded in 2023 by Marlene Smith, serves Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties, promoting environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity and connect people with native plants for a healthier planet. Wild Ones chapters are a space where like-minded people gather to support each other in learning about landscaping with native plants and to share with others in their communities and networks why it’s important to reintroduce native plants into public and private gardens and how to go about doing it. Chapters are where change happens. We are excited to offer Southern Maryland residents the opportunity to expand their impact in the natural landscaping movement and help promote native plants! Founded in 2022, Nurture Natives is a youth-led nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through environmental initiatives that enhance native biodiversity. Nurture Natives has given away 56,380+ native seedlings and 550 native saplings, planted 2.2 million native seeds, and disseminated 150 self-designed Nurture Natives Guides to nurseries across seven East Coast states, engaging with tens of thousands of individuals along the way. From a local 4-H club to a nationally recognized youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Nurture Natives has had the honor of discussing its mission with esteemed figures such as President Joe Biden, Governor Wes Moore and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller of Maryland, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, University of Maryland Dean of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dr. Craig Beyrouty, and TIME 2020 Kid of the Year Gitanjali Rao. As Nurture Natives grows, its vision remains resolute: to inspire, educate, and advocate for a future in which our youth and environment thrive.
