Jon Shaw Lore – The BayNet

Jon Shaw Lore

Jon Shaw Lore, Sr., aged 86, passed away peacefully at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness with his family by his side on July 16, 2024

Jon Shaw was born on April 2, 1938, to Gordon Ira Rupert and Dora Frances Lore. On September 19, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Alice Faye Jones.

In his youth, Jon Shaw enjoyed building and racing wooden speedboats and performing stunts while water skiing. The need for speed continued on land as his interests expanded to include rebuilding antique cars and a variety of boats. Always an adventurer, Jon Shaw acquired his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his family and friends up and down the east coast.

Jon Shaw was a waterman and a businessman. In 1888, his great grandfather Joseph Cobb Lore, Sr., started a seafood packing plant on Solomon’s Island. Alongside his family, Jon Shaw farmed, packed and shipped seafood across the country. After World War II, they specialized in shucking and packing oysters. The J. C. Lore Oyster House, which closed in 1978, now belongs to the Calvert Marine Museum and is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

In the late ’50s, Jon Shaw, Faye, and his family owned and operated Solomons Marina. They recognized a need for laundromat services, so they opened their first laundromat across the street. They soon added several more stores in Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties. Eventually, Jon and Faye expanded their business by offering rentals for extended stay apartments & commercial properties.

In 1978, Jon Shaw and Faye designed and built their dream home on the shores of the Patuxent River, directly across from Solomons Island. Over the years, they hosted many memorable gatherings at Baybank for family and friends, including their popular 4th of July celebrations.

Jon Shaw is survived by his wife, Alice Faye Lore; his daughters, Mary Ann Lore, Dora Frances Millen (Mardy), and Sarah Jane Lowe; his daughter-in-law, Patricia Lore; his grandchildren, Jon Shaw Lore III, Jessica Lawshe, Lindsey Perry, Alexandra and Logan Dudley, Dakota and Kara Lowe, as well as four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, G. I. Rupert and Dora Lore; son, Jon Shaw Lore, Jr.; and three siblings.
