ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Yesterday, the Joint Republican Caucus called for the immediate removal of Department of Juvenile Services Secretary Vincent Schiraldi in a letter sent to Governor Moore.
“In February of 2023, Republicans made their concerns known about Mr. Schiraldi’s philosophies, agenda and track record. Every Republican Senator voted against his nomination in the Senate Executive Nominations Committee and on the Senate Floor. Sadly, those concerns have become our reality, and we clearly need an immediate course correction and new leadership,” said Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey.
Worries about Schiraldi’s leadership have been growing more widespread given the continued increase in violent juvenile crime and the inability or unwillingness of the Department to ensure these offenders are not immediately released back into their communities and public schools. These and other failures of the Department are a threat to public safety and the futures of the young people the Department is supposed to serve.
“Secretary Schiraldi has not just drawn the ire of Republicans. It appears he is also losing the confidence of other leaders in Annapolis. We urge immediate action,” said Hershey.
“Secretary Schiraldi’s track record in Maryland and his history in New York and D.C. have proven he is not the person we need at the helm of this troubled agency,” said House Minority Leader Jason Buckel. “His catch-and-release policy for even the most violent repeat offenders is not what we need to keep our communities safe. It does not appear his actions are even in line Governor Moore’s vision and philosophy to protect Marylanders.”
