TOWSON, Md. – During the annual Torch Gala for Special Olympics Maryland, St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling and her mother Yumi Hogan were both presented with the 2024 Special Olympics Maryland Founders’ Champion Award.
“Jaymi, you have been present in the community for our athletes having raised funds and awareness through your support of the St. Mary’s Splash. But most impactful, by including Bailey Mewhinney as a member of your team through his internship, you send a message to leaders everywhere that we should be looking for opportunities to include individuals with intellectual disabilities in meaningful, impactful jobs that contribute to making the workplace more productive and inclusive,” said James Schmutz, President and CEO of Special Olympics Maryland. “You are helping build interactive inclusive communities of dignity and respect … Thank you for being CHAMPIONS for our athletes!”
Sterling was incredibly honored to receive such recognition.
“My family and I are incredibly honored to be presented with the Founders Champion Award,” said Sterling via social media. “THANK YOU Special Olympics Maryland for this wonderful recognition and congratulations to all who competed at this weekend’s Summer Games, especially my friends from Special Olympics Maryland-St. Mary’s County.”
