Investigative Report Released For June 2022 Fatal Crash In Prince George’s County

BALTIMORE – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Office of the Attorney General released its investigative report of the June 28, 2022, fatal crash following an attempted traffic stop in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

On June 8, 2022, at 6:25 a.m., Prince George’s County Police Department Corporal Antoinette Williams observed two cars traveling in the area of Birdie Lane and Harry S. Truman Drive in Upper Marlboro. As Cpl. Williams followed the two cars, which were driving one directly in front of the other, the cars accelerated at a high rate of speed and failed to completely stop at a stop sign. Cpl. Williams activated her patrol car’s emergency equipment, and the two cars again accelerated, traveling eastbound on White House Road. After about 13 seconds, the lead car crossed the solid double-yellow lane lines into oncoming traffic and struck an unrelated vehicle head-on. The driver of the unrelated vehicle, Jonny Morris, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the striking vehicle was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The IID concluded its investigation on December 27, 2022, and forwarded its report to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office on December 28, 2022. The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office notified the IID on February 10, 2023, of its decision not to prosecute the case.

The IID’s report contains detailed investigative findings and an analysis of relevant legal issues. Because the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office—not the IID—retains prosecution authority[1] in this case, the report does not make any recommendations as to whether any individual should or should not be charged. A copy of the investigative report can be found here.

The delay in the release of the investigative report was due to a separate investigation conducted by the local state’s attorney’s office for prosecution.
