WALDORF, Md. Melvin Andre Smoot, 37, of Indian Head, Maryland, was arrested on August 15, 2024, after a detailed investigation and surveillance operation by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. Smoot is facing multiple serious charges related to drug trafficking, including possession with intent to distribute narcotics.

According to the official documents, the arrest followed a controlled operation where Smoot was observed engaging in a drug transaction with Barry Cotney at a 7-Eleven on Mason Springs Road. During questioning by law enforcement, Cotney revealed that he was at the location to meet the “Mailman,” whom he identified as Melvin Smoot. Cotney admitted that he owed Smoot money for previous drug transactions and had just received a small quantity of crack cocaine from Smoot inside Smoot’s vehicle.

During the search of Smoot’s person and vehicle, officers found a substantial amount of narcotics, including 12.5 grams of suspected cocaine, 87.5 grams of crack cocaine, and multiple prescription pills. The street value of these drugs was estimated to be approximately $5,265. Additionally, Smoot was carrying $1,210 in cash, which officers suspect was tied to his illegal drug activities.

Barry Cotney, the buyer, was also taken into custody following the transaction. Smoot faces serious charges, with potential sentences that include up to 20 years in prison. He remains in custody as he awaits his next court appearance, where the full scope of his alleged activities will be assessed.
