WALDORF, Md. – On July 29, 2024, at approximately 6 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a significant gas leak in the area of McDaniel Road and Middletown Road. The initial call reported a strong odor emanating from a nearby construction site, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
The road was closed for the duration of the incident to ensure public safety. According to a fireman on site, Washington Gas was promptly dispatched to address the situation. The underground leak had been located and was identified as more severe than recent minor leaks, with gas visibly bubbling up from the pipes.
Residents of the Sun Stone Community were instructed to shelter in place while crews worked to mitigate the leak. Public Information Officer Bill Smith stated that the community had been very cooperative and patient throughout the ordeal.
Although residents couldn’t leave or enter the area during the shelter-in-place order, the situation initially raised concerns due to the escalating odor.
Smith clarified that the gas line extension being installed for new homes nearby is believed to be linked to the incident. Fortunately, no emergencies or injuries have been reported. The community’s cooperation has been crucial in managing the situation effectively.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
