Fire Started From Hoverboard In Indian Head Causes Significant Damage


INDIAN HEAD, Md. – On August 4, 2024, a fire erupted in the basement of a home located in the 5000 block of Oak Forest Court, causing extensive damage but resulting in no reported injuries.

The fire was first reported at 5:32 PM by the homeowner, who called 911 to report that a hoverboard had ignited in the basement, and the fire was spreading near the furnace. The Charles County Fire Department was dispatched immediately and arrived on the scene within minutes.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke conditions throughout the basement. Initial attempts to control the fire included securing the scene and ensuring the safety of all occupants. Two individuals were safely evacuated from the home, and Red Cross assistance was requested for the displaced residents.

Firefighters worked diligently to combat the flames, with multiple units on-site to provide support and ensure thorough ventilation of the home. By 6:10 PM, the fire had been extinguished, though significant damage to the basement was reported, including the knocking down of the basement ceiling and addressing the heavy smoke throughout the house.

Concerns regarding hazardous materials were addressed as the fire involved a hoverboard battery. Fire marshals confirmed that there were no ongoing hazards from the battery after the fire was extinguished.

Emergency medical services were on standby, though no injuries were reported. The homeowner expressed concern about the speed of response, which was assured to be as rapid as possible given the circumstances.

The scene was declared under control by 6:22 PM, with all firefighting units beginning to wrap up operations and conduct a final safety check.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the potential hazards associated with electronic devices and the importance of immediate response and preparedness in fire emergencies.
