LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office recently celebrated the retirement of Corporal Andrew Holton, a dedicated officer who served the community for 37 years. The retirement event included a heartfelt Final 10-42 call, marking the end of Corporal Holton’s distinguished career.
Corporal Holton, badge number 73, began his career with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office in 1979. Known for his commitment to community policing, he played a pivotal role in the Lexington Park Community Policing Hotspot Team. This initiative became a model for similar programs throughout Maryland, significantly reducing crime rates in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Holton’s dedication to working with youth was evident through his roles as a School Resource Officer and DARE Instructor at Chopticon High School and Margaret Brent Middle School. His efforts earned him the School Resource Officer of the Year award, reflecting his impact on the school community and his dedication to maintaining a safe environment for students.
Andrew Holton grew up in Mechanicsville, Maryland, in a family with deep connections to law enforcement. His father, Andrew Holton Sr., was a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army and later served at the Indian Head Naval Base. This background instilled in him a strong sense of duty and community service. Holton also has three brothers and two sisters, each contributing to the community in various ways.
Throughout his career, Holton was involved in numerous community initiatives, including the Knights of Columbus and the Civil Air Patrol. His community service extended beyond his professional duties, making a significant impact on the lives of many in St. Mary’s County.
Despite facing challenges, including injuries sustained in an automobile accident in 1986, Holton returned to the Sheriff’s Office in 1994 with renewed dedication. His resilience and unwavering commitment to public service have left an indelible mark on the community.
As he steps into retirement, Corporal Andrew Holton leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and community spirit that will inspire future generations of law enforcement officers. His contributions have set a high standard for community policing and youth engagement in St. Mary’s County.
