PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – On Dec. 4, 2023, Angel Manuel Jimenez died while detained at the Calvert County Detention Center. Despite numerous emails, phone calls, and a formal request filed by the family’s attorney, questions remain unanswered.

This is all the family knows after eight months of Jimenez’s death. On Nov. 30, 2023, Jimenez was pulled over. During the traffic stop, it was discovered Jimenez had an outstanding warrant for child support. However, a check of Maryland Case Search produced negative results for any charges against Jimenez. Jimenez was arrested and transported to the detention center.

On Dec. 4, 2023, only four days later, the family received a phone call from Sgt. Simms and were advised Mr. Jimenez was deceased. During this phone call, the family was advised Jimenez died from heart complications. According to the family, they were unaware of any health issues Jimenez, 50, was allegedly suffering.

On July 26, 2024, the family was notified by the medical examiner that Jimenez’s death was ruled a “homicide by restraint.”

To date, the family has been left hurt and confused by the lack of information and transparency. The family demands their questions be answered and the public be made aware of their devastating loss. Jimenez was a loving uncle, brother, and son. He was a self-employed certified electrician with a bright future, which was cut short. Jimenez grew up in Bronx, N.Y., and split his time in Puerto Rico.

The family has not seen a police report in reference to the traffic stop or a copy of the alleged warrant. The family demanded to know the probable cause for the initial traffic stop. The vehicle Jimenez was driving is unaccounted for and his personal effects have not been released.

The family is asking to see body camera footage of the traffic stop, intake forms from the detention center indicating his health at the time of booking, as well as surveillance video of the booking area.

This is a developing story that The BayNet will continue to follow.
