NORTH BEACH, Md. – Anthony Wayne Simpson Jr., a resident of Fredericksburg, VA, has been charged with second-degree murder and other related charges following a fatal shooting incident in North Beach, Maryland.
On the evening of June 26, 2024, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 9500 Sea Gull Court. Upon arrival, officers found William Lee Hutcherson Jr. lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Hutcherson was pronounced dead at the scene by Fire and EMS personnel.
According to court documents, witnesses and surveillance footage reportedly revealed that an argument between Hutcherson and Simpson escalated into a physical altercation. Hutcherson initially possessed a handgun during the confrontation but lost control of the weapon, which Simpson then used to allegedly fatally shoot Hutcherson. Simpson remained at the scene and awaited law enforcement’s arrival, having already informed dispatchers that he was the shooter and had placed the firearm, an Inter-Arms 9MM semi-auto handgun, near the front steps of the residence.
Hutcherson’s girlfriend, who was reportedly present at the scene, confirmed that Hutcherson had called her earlier in the evening to inform her that he was bringing a friend over to see their pit bulls. She identified Simpson as the friend who had accompanied Hutcherson.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Simpson, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing any firearms, had a history of felony assault and use of a handgun in a crime of violence.
Simpson was taken into custody and is currently facing charges including second-degree murder, first-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
