SOLOMONS, Md. – July holds a FINTASTIC month of fun for the whole family at the museum. One of the museum’s most popular events, Sharkfest, will commence on July 13! In addition, we are offering a new program for families this summer; be sure to check out Family Fun Fridays! Select days in the month of July – Lore Oyster House

Join us at the newly refurbished Lore Oyster House. Located six-tenths of a mile south of the main museum campus on Solomons Island Road, this 1934 seafood packing house offers exhibits that explore all aspects of oyster processing. No admission required. Visit our website for all summer dates! Lore Oyster House | Calvert Marine Museum, MD – Official Website

Wednesday through Sunday, the month of July – Wm. B. Tennison Public Cruise 2 p.m.

Relax and enjoy a leisurely one-hour sightseeing cruise on the river aboard the Wm. B. Tennison, a log-built bugeye. Capacity allows for 40 guests. Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children, infant through 12 years. On Saturdays and Sundays, there will also be a 3:10 p.m. cruise. For more information and to register visit: Wm. B. Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays in the month of July – Cove Point Lighthouse grounds and Visitors Center 1 – 4 p.m.

The Cove Point Lighthouse grounds and Visitors Center are open to the public during the summer months to enjoy a view of the Calvert Cliffs, explore the base of the lighthouse tower, and learn about the history of the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. No admission required. NOTE: The beach is not open to the public.

Monday, July 1 – Museum Store CLOSED for Inventory all day

The Museum Store will be closed all day on July 1 for annual inventory processing and will reopen on July 2 at 10:15 a.m. We hope to see you then!

Thursdays, July 4 & 11 – Sea Squirts: Animal Sounds 10:15 & 11:15 a.m. 

Children 18 months to 3 years, with an adult, are invited to discover the museum together through music, stories, and special activities. Join us for story time and a craft, available while supplies last. Sessions are 25-40 minutes. Cost is free with museum admission. Sign up at the Admissions Desk when you arrive. Friday, July 5 – First Fossil Friday! 1 – 4:30 p.m.

Fossil hunters, bring your fossil finds from the Calvert Cliffs or other local areas to be identified! This service is provided for free; however, admission fees apply for access to CMM exhibits.

Sundays, July 7, 14, 21, & 28 – Sunday Afternoons with Poppie 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Make your Sunday afternoon memorable by coming to visit with our very own Pop Star, “Poppie,” a Virginia opossum. You can join the Poppie paparazzi in the museum lobby with one of our educational interpreters, learn all kinds of fun possum facts, and visit the Museum Store for possum fan gear. Since the welfare of our animals is our primary concern, Poppie’s ability to visit with her adoring public may occasionally be subject to change on short notice.

Tuesday, July 9 – NEW Program: Creature Feature 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.

Come to the museum for the monthly mystery Creature Feature. Every second Tuesday of the month, the CMM Education team will feature an animal in the museum lobby that is not normally on display. Learn about a new animal and discover the wonderful variety of creatures found in our local estuaries. Take-home educational coloring pages will be available! Check our social media feed for the big reveal on Monday to find out what Tuesday’s Creature Feature will be! Included with museum admission.

Saturday, July 13 – Sharkfest! 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Celebrate all things shark, all day, at CMM! Live sharks will be featured in the Corbin Nature Pavilion for viewing. Learn fascinating ‘sharktoids’, examine evidence of prehistoric sharks, and take a picture in the life-size jaws of a Megalodon shark. Food and drinks will be for sale on site. Strollers and carts are not allowed in the museum for SHARKFEST. We strongly recommend purchasing admission tickets in advance if you are not a member. Friday, July 19 – Family Fun Friday: Citizen Science 9 – 11 a.m.

Ever wonder how you and your family can help the environment in a real and meaningful way? Citizen science projects are everywhere, you just need to know where to look and how to participate. This program will teach you just that. Not only will you learn how you can gather scientific data that assists researchers, but you can also make it an adventure that the entire family can share and enjoy!

Saturday, July 20 – Toy Boat Building 1 – 4 p.m.

Make a toy boat from wood under the Corbin Nature Pavilion! Space and materials are limited. Visitors will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. For ages 5 and up. Museum admission applies; In addition, a donation of $2 per boat is requested. Sponsored by the Patuxent Small Craft Guild.

Thursdays, July 18 & 25 – Little Minnows: Animal Sounds 10:15 & 11:15 a.m.

For preschoolers ages 3 – 5, with an adult. This program focuses on one of the museum’s three themes. Join us for story time and a craft, available while supplies last. Sessions are 25-40 minutes. Friday, July 26 – Family Fun Friday: Bugs and Blooms 9 – 11 a.m.

Curious about which insects benefit your garden? Want to learn simple, eco-friendly practices for your backyard? Join us at the Corbin Nature Pavilion for a morning of exploring local insects, plants, and discover how to attract and support local wildlife in your own backyard.

Explore how the prehistoric past, natural environments, and maritime heritage come to life and tell a unique story of the Chesapeake Bay. The Calvert Marine Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is $11.00 for adults; $9.00 for seniors, military, and veterans with valid I.D, AAA and AARP members; $6.00 for children ages 5 – 12; children under 5 and museum members are admitted free.
