Calvert Affirms Several Administrative Appointments

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – During their June 13, 2024, meeting, the Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) Board of Education affirmed several administrative appointments. All appointments were passed unanimously

CCPS Superintendent Dr. Andrae Townsel started off with the appointment of Jamie Smith as Principal of Dowell Elementary School. Smith has been the Principal of Southern Middle School since 2019. Smith has also served as a Dean, Assistant Principal, and Elementary School teacher.

Next, Ryan Sammons was appointed as Assistant Principal of the Career and Technology Academy. Sammons was previously serving as an Inclusive Education Facilitator. Sammons has also served as Dean of students at Mill Creek Middle School and has served in the Assistant Principal position at various middle schools.

Melissa Huffman was appointed as Assistant Principal at Mount Harmony Elementary School. Huffman has served as Assistant Principal at Mutual Elementary School since August 2023. Huffman has also taught first and third grade at Huntingtown Elementary School, and second grade at Kingsbury Elementary School.

Willanette Thomas Lohr was appointed as Assistant Principal of Southern Middle School. Lohr currently serves as an Inclusive Education Facilitator. Lohr started her career in CCPS in 2001. Lohr also contributes to the Maryland State Department’s Expert Review Team.

Angelica Van Bavel was appointed as Assistant Principal at Mutual Elementary School. Bavel began her career as a kindergarten teacher in Charles County. She later transitioned to teaching second grade before joining CCPS. Van Bavel initially served as a hybrid teacher during the 2020-2021 school year, then taught first grade at Huntingtown Elementary School. Van Bavel most recently served as Dean of students at Windy Hill Elementary.

Lastly, Joram Regis was appointed as Principal of Plum Point Middle School. Regis most recently served as Principal of Ferguson Pre-K-8 school in the school district of the city of York, Pennsylvania. Other positions Regis has held include Vice Principal, Academic Advisor, Coordinator, Principal Trainer, Instructional Designer, and Guidance Counselor. Regis also served in the United States Marine Corps as a noncommissioned Officer for six years.
