PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – The Calvert County Health Department is offering a collection of public programs that will help residents improve their health and provide useful information about medical risks.
Each program offered by the Health Department runs throughout the year, so you’ll have the opportunity to join any of them regardless of the season you’d like to start. Below, we’ve listed each of the four community health programs you can join in Calvert County, and key information about them.
Living Well With Diabetes
The Living Well With Diabetes Program is a self-management workshop focusing on Pre-Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. It runs for six weeks and will offer you tips and strategies for managing diabetes. A few of the things you’ll learn about include healthy diets and physical exercise routines.

Healthy Hearts Start At Home
Also known as the Healthy Heart Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program, this lifestyle program for residents with hypertension lasts for four months. Attendees learn how to control and monitor their blood pressure. The lessons taught are evidence-based, and you’ll learn with the support of others.

There are a few requirements listed on the Calvert County Health Department website you must meet before joining this program, including the following five.
- 18 Years Of Age Or Older
- Do Not Have And Are Not At Risk Of Having Lymphedema
- Do Not Have Atrial Fibrillation Or Any Arrhythmias
- Not Experienced Any Recent Cardiac Events
- Have Confirmed High Blood Pressure Or Are Currently Taking Anti-Hypertensive Medication
Tobacco Cessation
The Quit Tobacco Program is there for Calvert County residents who are having trouble quitting tobacco products. During this program, you’ll be introduced to tools that will help reduce cravings, free medication aids, stress management tips, and a weekly support group of peers. The most important thing you’ll gain from the eight-week Quit Tobacco Program is the development of a personal plan to quit tobacco.
By completing this registration form, you’ll have the opportunity to choose when you’d like to start the program. If you can’t attend a class, interested residents are encouraged to call 410-535-5400 to discuss other options.
Prevent Type Two
The Prevent Type 2 Program features year-round classes that are free and informative. The official goals of this program are to increase the exercise of attendees by 150 minutes every week and reduce body weight by 4-5%. Health-wise, every 2.2 pounds of body weight loss decreases the chance of diabetes risk in the future.
