LEONARDTOWN, Md. – From supervising shifts to crafting worlds, Sergeant Jacob Jones, a seasoned supervisor at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, offers a glimpse into his dual life as a law enforcement professional and a published author.
Sgt. Jones has dedicated 15 1/2 years to serving in the Detention Center, where he currently leads his squad as a shift supervisor. Behind the badge, however, lies a creative mind and a burgeoning author, publishing his first book in March 2022, “The Beginning- Book One.”

“Many things inspire me in writing my books,” Sgt. Jones shares. “From the captivating world- building of ‘Lord of the Rings1 to the immersive storytelling in role-playing games, even music has been a driving force. Additionally, life events- both positive and negative, fueled my inspiration. The unwavering support of my family and friends gave me the confidence to pursue publishing my works.”
His journey into the realm of writing was not swift. “My first book took me two years to write,” Sgt. Jones confesses. “I took my time, doubting its potential for publication. However, my second book was faster and completed within nine months. I usually craft my stories during pockets of free time, often when my children are at school or sound asleep.” Currently immersed in his third book, Sgt. Jones is halfway through after several months of dedicated writing.
Outside of his literary pursuits, Sgt. Jones reflects on his educational journey. “I didn’t pursue formal education after high school,” he explains. “Instead, I delved straight into the workforce, ultimately finding my calling in Law Enforcement Corrections. However, I do intend to pursue online courses in the future before my eventual retirement.”

Sgt. Jones encourages anyone considering a career in Law Enforcement to consider beginning their profession in the Corrections Center. It is a great opportunity to develop the needed skillsets and learn the nuances, challenges, and personalities needed to succeed in this career field.
Through his own journey, Sgt. Jones exemplifies how starting in corrections can lay a strong foundation, allowing one to excel in law enforcement while also embracing personal passions. In a captivating blend of duty and imagination, Sgt. Jones embodies the essence of balancing a demanding career in law enforcement with a creative passion.
