With a revenue of US$21.7 billion in 2021, the Netherlands is the 17th largest market for eCommerce, beating out Turkey but trailing Mexico.

The Dutch eCommerce market grew 14% in 2021, which contributed to the worldwide growth rate of 15%. Similar to the Netherlands, global eCommerce sales are expected increase in upcoming years. As new markets are constantly emerging, global growth will continue over time, and is currently lead by several international players as outlined in this article. East and Southeast Asia will have a large impact on this development because of their growing middle class and lack of offline infrastructure.

For the first time in many years, Amazon is now one of the top ecommerce platforms in Holland. It has passed Zalando and Wehkamp to take 4th place. Bol.com still remains number 1 though. Additionally, electronics store Coolblue is no longer the second largest online seller– Albert Heijn takes that spot by only 30 million euros.

Twinkle, a Dutch magazine, released its 14th annual ranking of the biggest ecommerce companies in Netherlands today. Bol.com, an online marketplace, is still#1 . Last year Albert Heijn came close to being #2 , but now for the first time in years – has beaten Coolblue ,an electronics retailer. Amazon is quickly coming up and almost at the top 3.

Albert Heijn is in the lead by 30 million euros

Though the top of Dutch ecommerce continues to grow, it is doing so at a slower pace than 2020 – which was a record year. In 2021, the revenue for the biggest retailers rose 27.5 percent while during 2020’s pandemic, that number grew to an impressive 45 percent.

Coolblue failed to keep up with Albert Heijn last year, and now the grocery store leads by a margin of 30 million euros in revenue. This marks the first time in five years that Coolblue is not the second-largest online retailer in the Netherlands.

Amazon reaching the top of the market

Amazon has moved up two positions to fourth place. The company’s revenue has doubled this year, from 500 million euros to 1 billion euros. This means a difference of 500 million euros with the top three. Amazon has therefore outpaced Zalando and Wehkamp.

Jumbo and Picnic, well-known food delivery services, are at the top of the list. HelloFresh, a newcomer from last year, falls outside of the top 10 along with department store Bijenkorf. Instead, Apple and Ikea take 9th and 10th place.

This year, four new flash delivery services make their debut in the ranking: Gorillas, Flink, Getir and Zapp. However, only Gorillas (67th place) and Flink (85th place) manage to enter the top 100.

Marketplaces are included to the list

The ranking for this year now includes marketplaces, which has extended the list of players from 250 to 300. Before, only platforms that made most of their revenue from sales were included on the list.

Because third-party sales on Bol.com and Amazon are counted for the partner seller as well as the platform, a part of the revenues are double-counted. Twinkle magazine says they are aware of this issue, but want to report where transactions are taking place regardless. By doing so, eBay, AliExpress and Wish enter the top 100 for the first time.
