‘Squid Game’ Season 2 release date announced as Netflix renews series for a final season

Squid Game‘s long-awaited second season finally has a release date, revealed via a athletics-themed teaser trailer. A third and final season has also been greenlit, which will wrap up the popular Korean series‘ sinister playground games.

Netflix has announced that Squid Game Season 2 will arrive on Dec. 26, allowing you to cap off this year’s Christmas festivities by watching its dystopian death games. Squid Game has also been renewed for Season 3, which will conclude the series in 2025.

Arriving three years after the series first premiered, Squid Game‘s second season will continue to follow Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) as he enters the deadly game once more. However, this time he isn’t after money — he’s after revenge.

Considering the deadly events of the Season 1, it’s unlikely that we’ll see many other previous cast members return. However, we do know that Gi-hun will be up against the game’s returning overseer Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has also said that he’s interested in exploring Front Man’s relationship with his police officer brother Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), suggesting the latter likely survived the events of Season 1. We’ll just have to wait until the new season premieres to find out whether the siblings’ relationship survived as well.

“Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again,” Hwang wrote in a letter to fans. “Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year. I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.”
