🏅Captain Will Gates, who has dedicated decades to the MARYLAND DOVE, was honored with the Cross Bottony Award. This award, established in 1988, is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation of Historic St. Mary’s City and the interpretation of Maryland’s rich history. The award itself is a handcrafted silver pin, designed in the shape of the Crossland Cross, a symbol found in the Maryland state flag.

MARYLAND DOVE is Historic St. Mary’s City’s floating ambassador and one of its most popular exhibits. The ship design is based on the original Dove, a 17th century trading ship that sailed to the Maryland colony with Ark in 1634.
