Some two dozen drivers were pulled over by Las Vegas police officers during Saturday’s DUI Blitz and were arrested for intoxicated driving.
In the short time span, 22 individuals were charged with DUI. One of the drivers was found to have a blood alcohol level of .202%, police revealed. That’s over twice the legal limit.
At that level, motorists may have multiple side effects from consuming excessive alcohol, according to Minnesota’s College of Saint Benedict.
These include:
- Feeling confused, disoriented, as well as being unable to stand or walk properly.
- Having nausea and vomiting.
- Possible blackouts.
- Another few drinks can lead to someone passing out.
In Nevada, it’s illegal for adults to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or higher.
For the first DUI offense, the defendant, if convicted in Nevada, may spend months in jail or be ordered to pay a sizable fine.
Other Arrests
Also, during Saturday’s blitz, 81 citations were issued to drivers for other violations. Beyond that, there were five additional arrests.
The selective enforcement involved officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) Northeast Area Command, Southeast Area Command, and Traffic Bureau.
The DUI Blitz initiative was re-commenced by the LVMPD on May 18 following DUI-linked collisions earlier in the year, as well as numerous fatal crashes due to DUI or excessive speed in 2023. Many of the intoxicated drivers had been drinking at casino bars, police revealed.
Between May 18 and June 11 under the blitz, LVMPD made a total of 84 DUI arrests, 827 citations were issued, and 20 other arrests were made. Officers made 1,132 traffic stops during the enforcement operation, too. Police also revealed they seized seven illegal guns during the blitz.
The LVMPD DUI Strike Team is comprised of 10 officers who are making a big difference on the roads,” Metro said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday.
“Since the team was restarted on May 18, check out some of the items they have taken off the streets and impaired drivers off the roads.” They included illegal substances and items.
Deadly DUI Sentence
Last week, it was revealed that the intoxicated man who plowed his car into two Nevada state troopers on a Las Vegas highway in November will be spending at least 16 years behind bars.
Jemarcus Williams, 46, was sentenced last Tuesday to between 16 and 40 years for the deadly crash. He will be eligible for parole after serving 16 years in prison. In April, Williams pleaded guilty to two counts of DUI resulting in death.
The November 30 crash on I-15 at the D Street offramp led to the deaths of State Trooper Alberto Felix and State Police Sergeant Michael Abbate.
