Navy Plebes Conquer the Herndon Climb
In an annual Navy tradition like no other, freshman plebes at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis were required to summit a greasy 21-ft monument on May 17.
By successfully working together to place an upperclassman hat atop the statue, the plebes symbolically marked their passage from first-years into becoming fourth class midshipmen.
The traditional Herndon Climb dates back to the 1950s. This year’s crop of enrollees completed the challenge in 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 51 seconds (not bad).
In case you’re wondering: The longest-ever try in recorded history was by the class of 1998, which needed 4 hours and 5 minutes to complete it.
